A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Key is known throughout the United States for his talents in composition, musical direction and keyboard musicianship. He is a former member of the DC Youth Orchestra, Largo High School Band, and former music director of the University of Maryland Baltimore County Gospel Choir. Mr. Key’s acclaimed compositions have received performances in major concert halls throughout the country. He has performed with and arranged for many nationally renowned artists including Edwin Hawkins, Walter Hawkins, Richard Smallwood, Yolanda Adams, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Daryl Coley, Oleta Adams, Vickie Winans, Jennifer Holiday, and Donnie McClurkin. In March 1995, Mr. Key organized a 17-member ensemble to participate in an international music festival in Paris, France. The troupe received rave reviews for their standing room only performances. In July 1998, this same ensemble performed before audiences in Holland, Norway, Austria, and France, again receiving notable acclaim. In November 2000, Mr. Key premiered “Onward Suite” for Chorus and Orchestra, a work commissioned for the 90th Anniversary of the Third Street Church of God in Washington, DC. Most recently, Mr. Key served as a member of the Editorial Committee for The African American Heritage Hymnal, published in March 2001, designed to preserve the rich oral tradition of African American sacred song in printed form. Mr. Key is also writer/arranger for "Steve Key & Company" and serves on the musical staffs of Third Street Church of God, Asbury United Methodist Church (Washington, DC), and Alfred Street Baptist Church (Alexandria, VA). A graduate of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, he is currently employed as a Computer Specialist for the Air Force Pentagon Communications Agency and is also Founder and President of StepKey Music.
